What is ESG? Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
What is ESG? A few years ago, most businesses measured success using one number – profit. Today, that’s no longer enough. Investors, customers, employees and even governments want to know how a company earns its profits. Does it care about the environment? Does it treat its employees fairly? Is it managed ethically? ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. Think of it as a report card that looks beyond financial performance and evaluates how responsibly a business operates. The Environmental pillar looks at how a company manages its impact on the planet, including energy use, carbon emissions, water consumption and waste. The Social pillar focuses on people – employees, customers, suppliers and the communities a business serves. Workplace safety, diversity and employee wellbeing all fall under this category. The Governance pillar is about leadership and accountability. It covers areas such as ethical decision-making, board oversight, transparency and compliance. Here’s a simple example Imagine two hotels with similar occupancy rates and profits. One invests in energy-efficient lighting, reduces water consumption, trains employees on sustainability and publishes transparent sustainability reports. The other does not. Both may be profitable today, but the first hotel is likely to be better prepared for the future. That is the value – it helps organizations identify risks, improve performance and build long-term trust. The good news is that you do not need to transform your business overnight. Start by measuring a few key indicators, set realistic goals and improve consistently. Small actions, tracked over time, often create the biggest impact. Next Steps At GreenEdge Institute, we believe ESG is not just for large corporations. Every organization – whether a startup, a school, a hotel or a family business – can begin its sustainability journey one step at a time. #GreenEdge #GreenEdgeInstitute #ESG #EnvironmentalSocialGovernance #Sustainability #SustainableBusiness #CorporateSustainability #ResponsibleBusiness #BusinessEthics #Business #ClimateAction #NetZero #ESGStrategy #SustainabilityLeadership #GreenBusiness #SustainableDevelopment #FutureReady #ESGEducation #SustainabilityLearning #SustainabilityJourney
